From Content Brand to Cultural Ecosystem

Art of Manliness had spent nearly two decades since 2008 building one of the most influential personal development publications on the internet. But beneath the success of the website, podcast, community, and newsletter lived a deeper challenge:

The business had evolved into three distinct entities—Art of Manliness, Dying Breed, and The Strenuous Life—without a unified framework connecting them.

Our task wasn't simply to redesign a website.

It was to help (re)create a brand system capable of expressing a philosophy.

“Their attention to detail and commitment to quality truly stood out. We’ve already recommended them to others.”

— Brett McKay, Founder AoM

The Challenge

For years, Art of Manliness helped millions of readers develop character, competence, and confidence.

But as the business expanded organically over time, its offerings became increasingly fragmented:

  • Art of Manliness served as the educational hub.

  • Dying Breed became a space for deeper intellectual exploration.

  • The Strenuous Life fostered real-world physicality with cohorts for accountability and community.

Each brand was successful in its own right, but the relationship between them was largely invisible.

Visitors could consume content for years without understanding how the pieces fit together.

The challenge was clear:

How do you transform three successful brands into one coherent journey?

Articulating The Red Thread

We began with strategy.

Through audience research, brand positioning, archetype development, and ecosystem mapping, we uncovered the central idea already connecting everything Brett & Kate McKay had built:

Practicing Timeless Virtue in Thought, Word, and Deed.

This became the foundation of the new McKay Inc brand architecture.

A framework that organized every touchpoint around a progression:

Thought → Word → Deed

  • Dying Breed became the place for exploration and discovery.

  • Art of Manliness became the voice translating ideas into practical wisdom.

  • The Strenuous Life became the proving ground where ideas become action.

What had previously been three brands became one integrated system.

Creating a Modern Institution

Most lifestyle brands are built around personalities.

This one was built around principles.

The new identity system was designed to communicate permanence, purpose, and cultural stewardship rather than trends or personal branding.

Drawing inspiration from Americana, athletics, editorial publishing, fraternal organizations, and classical virtue traditions, we developed a visual language that felt:

  • Timeless without becoming nostalgic

  • Masculine without becoming performative

  • Contemporary without chasing trends

The result is a brand that feels less like a media company and more like a modern institution.

Reimagine The Experience

The existing website functioned primarily as a content archive.

The new experience was designed as a guided ecosystem.

Content was reorganized into clear developmental pillars:

  • Character

  • Skills

  • Strength

  • Social

  • Style

  • Culture

Each category reinforces the broader mission while helping visitors navigate the vast library of content through purpose rather than chronology.

The goal wasn't simply to help users find articles.

It was to help them find a path.

Connecting The Ecosystem

One of the most important objectives of the redesign was encouraging movement between brands.

Rather than treating the website, newsletter, podcast, and community as separate products, we designed them as interconnected stages of engagement.

A reader might:

Discover an idea through Art of Manliness.

Explore it more deeply through Dying Breed.

Then put it into practice through The Strenuous Life.

Every touchpoint was designed to strengthen the next.

The result is a system that increases engagement while creating deeper alignment with the organization's mission.

The Outcome

The new McKay Inc ecosystem transforms a collection of successful brands into a unified platform for personal growth.

By aligning strategy, identity, content architecture, and user experience around a single philosophy, the redesign creates a clearer pathway from curiosity to commitment.

What was once a media property now feels like something larger:

A modern institution dedicated to helping people live with greater character, competence, and purpose.
